ABOUT
We are She Can Make A Difference - an organization that aims to empower 5th and 6th grade girls throughout the City of Columbus and the surrounding area, by enabling them to realize their own potential and change the world.
We carry out this mission by visiting various elementary schools and facilitating discussions with the female students about body positivity, the power of self-love, and representation and colorism. This year we plan to teach our lessons to thirty elementary schools throughout the city of Columbus. Through sharing our own experiences as women and creating a safe space for the students to share, we help the girls realize that they are not alone in the struggles they undergo and create a supportive community.
She Can Make A Difference dedicates nearly each Wednesday to having the aforementioned discussions, however, as we are organizing a retreat named She Can Make A Difference Today, we are now also allocating our time to planning the event.
Our Event
Our meetings consist of forming connections with businesses as well as contacting other organizations in order to collaborate with them. Such contacts are required as the event will have 25-30 Booths present to educate and inspire the girls. Hence, we are constantly seeking out women from different spheres to either host a booth or give a speech. Organizations, such as Yes We Can, are also involved with our retreat.
Since our event will be free to all the girls we have visited as well as their families, we are constantly seeking out grants and donations from local Columbus organizations. Thus far, we have been granted SOUP funding and have fundraised $400 through YouCaring.
Moreover, we also having been planning to provide the girls free food and drinks. Many of our meetings have been dedicated to process of obtaining free catering from various restaurants, including Chipotle. Through emails and conferences we have also secured donations from local restaurants, such as from Cheryl’s Cookies and Buckeye Donuts.
Lastly, our meetings are also dedicated to planning the logistics of the event. This includes organizing how the booths will be set up and seeking out volunteers.
